Guernica: In Response

In 2023, my collaborative partner Hannah Fairweather and I were are invited to install at The Mint Museum Randolph, as part of the exhibit Picasso’s Landscapes: Out of Bounds.

The museum initially asked all ten participating artists/collaborators to respond to Picasso’s controversial antiwar painting Guernica, 1937. We agreed, with the understanding that we too would be creating antiwar artwork. The museum would go on to change it’s request for art to include responding to Picasso’s landscape painting. Hannah and I were one of the only installations to still respond to Guernica.

We printed large format media photos of protests and wartime in recent years from around the world. The images swayed on wire amidst folds of fabric and yarn, resembling layers of muscle, blood, and innards. Everything was fixed to wires every 12 inches into the corner of the gallery, so you could see into the depth of the work.

This installation was quietly the last project we did under the name Brand the Moth.
