SECCA (now North Carolina Museum of Art, Winston-Salem).

To round out my first year of grief studies and intentional exploration, art and travel for my current collection, I returned to Winston-Salem to visit the (now) North Carolina Museum of Art with Hannah Fairweather.

On view were two wonderful exhibits, William Downs ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ where the artist covered the gallery walls with on-site floor to ceiling murals.

The messy brushstrokes and looming figures were incredibly inspiring, reinforcing a notion that I always struggled with as an artist; perfection isn’t required for impact.

Additionally on view was, ‘The Threads We Follow,’ a beautiful curation of contemporary African-American fiber works. The use of mixed materials and story-telling, considering alternate realities alongside lived histories, offered a powerful, thought-provoking narrative.

With artworks by Aliyah Bonnette, Amalia Galdona Broche, Ambrose Rhapsody Murray, April Bey, Basil Kincaid, Cynthia Alberto, Ebony G Patterson, John Paul Morabito, Lakea Shepard, Lien Truong, and Pia Camil.

Truly, just gorgeous work.
