During my trip to LA in 2023, I visited The Broad Museum, with the pleasure of seeing the Kieth Herring retrospective; Kieth Herring: Art is for Everybody. As well as, the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens.
Here is my LA round-up of favorites from the trip:

The Broad Museum:

Kieth Herring: Art is For Everybody.
This was an incredible collection of Kieth Herring’s work and legacy. So much of it I had never even seen documented before, with artworks and artifacts from his life kept in the vault for over 30 years. The work get’s weirder as you scroll.

The Huntington:
Honestly, this was probably my favorite. The grounds are expansive, and do I mean it. There are multiple museum collections housed here, alongside the library and incredible gardens featuring vegetation from all over the globe. It was really interesting to note that the style of collection felt unique from the East coast museums I grew up with. I hadn’t considered that different locations would have their own style of art collection before this trip made it clear.

What was really cool was seeing Kehinde Wiley’s, ‘Portrait of a Young Gentleman’ positioned at the head of this Victorian gallery full of British grand manner portraits. The painting was originally commissioned by the Huntington as a response to the famous ‘Blue Boy,’ also on display in the collection.

Amidst a leaning towards these sort of odd portrayals of humanity, the curation seemed to have a particular focus on high-contrast and interesting lighting. I photographed so many examples from the collection, these three are my favorites.

And then there are the gardens…

The Huntington’s straight up used to live here.

Overall, this trip was a feast for the eyes.
